There's still a huge negative stigma associated with music within the Body. "Contemporary" music is still often viewed as contenptuous in regards to The Gospel and God, Himself. The music you hear today is not as widely accepted/received as you may think.
Piracy is also an issue within the Body. I'm convinced that most consumers don't understand copyrights. I've heard believers ask to burn copies of Fred Hammond and Kirk Frankiln right in the church. Apparently, there's a mentality that, "It's okay to copy when I'm using it for choir rehearsal."
The MP3 revolution has changed everything. Consumers are shifting drastically away from purchasing units such as CDs and albums - items recorded via soundscan. Now, it's just as easy to get the latest tracks online in peer-to-peer networks - or from the brother or sister down the street (see my second point - Piracy).
Finally, let's not forget that this is the music Sin-dustry. Our adversary is not going to make it that easy for the Gospel Artists to make it to equal selling stature as that of the Eminems, Ushers, 50 Cents, etc. Plus, sex and violence sells, while Jesus and Love "stales" - on the shelves, that is.
Just some things to consider.

In a way it's not about gospel artists going platinum, not saying that they won't profit from what they're doing. But it's so the gospel can be preached.
Satan is the prince of the powers of the air so even with a lot of people going forth, there also needs to be a lot of spiritual warfare going forth as well.
Burning CD's is an isssue as well, but God is going to get the glory anyhow! We gotta know who we serving and why we are serving Him! It's about the gospel!
Trust me if you are in the perfect will of God and you are doing what He said, I don't care if 5 million people burn a CD, you still gonna get what God said, and your name will be spread abroad no matter what!
God Bless,
Joy

That is a powerful question. The answer is 'disobedience'. God won't allow Gospel artists to transcend until they all surrender and become obedient and come together as one. Gospel community tried to destroy Kirk Franklin (isn't he the last Gospel singer that went Platinum) and God has punished the Gospel community ever since and has exiled them in tradition, where they are walking around in circles. With over a Billion Christians and no Platinum Gospel Artists, is that a sign that God is not pleased and not providing bounty for slackness? I don't know but your question is powerful and tells you that something is not right and I think for the Gospel community to blame anyone other self is a mistake and will lead to more pain and suffering and further walking in circles for another 40 years and that's the truth.

also, another point is that i dont know too many white people that listen to gospel music, so i'm sure that is a big factor. cuz u know i heard a statistic that white people buy like 70 percent of secular hiphop music, and a much higher percentage i'm sure in rock n roll and country, where artists in those genres are going platinum (hiphop, rock, country)... and in general, in my city at least, black folks just cant afford to buy alot of cd's. not as much as white folks anyway, and thats a statistic. so the fact that gospel music almost ONLY appeals to black chuch folk, the market is simply 10 times smaller than that of other genres.

Gospel music is a very small market with an even smaller base of consumers.
Most people (saved or not) use music as a method of enjoying themselves/relaxing etc. With that said, most choirs and such wouldnt really lend itself to meeting that desired 'need'/want.

SP- I read that it's actually 80% and I would imagine that it's probably 1% for Gospel. But, there are 30 million African-Americans and mega-churches filled with coffers of millions of dollars and churches with millions of members, but still no platinum Gospel artists, so whose to blame?. No unity and too much hate and that's the truth.

AMEN!
I feel ya, gooch. As a Gospel Artist myself, I can tell you that it is very hard out there.
I'm a minister and drummer in a gospel jazz band - The Upper Room. I continue to pour over the points made here, as well as the perceptions of music within the Body of Christ. It's a shame that Gospel Artists seem to get more ostracism than support from the Body.
I'm sure Jealousy and Envy are sitting right there in the conregation when these artists praise and worship God through their talents. Also, it goes back to the question, "What's in it for me?" "So what if so-and-so goes platinum. That ain't paying my bills!" I wonder how many times that has been said within the Body!
Nevertheless, the support IS there and I believe it is going to take more education on this subject in order to get more support from the pews. That increased support may become evident in more sales and more platinum artists. While I think that is a cool thing, it may not be the best thing. "More Platinum, More Problems" - maybe. For all I know, what we're seeing could be a protection from God, Himself - shielding His beloved from things we can't even image. Just a thought.
One last thing. Most Gospel Artists may be having such a hard time seling records because they don't know how to sell records. Yeah, they know how to sing and perform, but selling records is a business. Many artists find out the hard way that in this sin-dustry, business outweighs talent. Talent is "a dime a dozen" (maybe even a penny-a-dozen now). Educating and developing Gospel Artists to be business-minded along with Godly-minded will also help improve the situation.

Here's some more truth for you. Church pews are getting emptier and emptier by the day. Particularly in the Black Church. Little Churches are being engulfed by MegaChurches and the Church which used to be filled with little kids running and playing in the pews is now filled with Older Single Parents and Grandmas. Now think about that in regards to Gospel Music. All of that hate and binding to Tradition is causing the Traditional Church to crumble to its knees.
No, I am not rejoicing to this because it is very sad. But, when adults in the Black community turned away from the Youth and let their families be destroyed by failing to be obedient and by failing to show love, the results being reaped now were inevitable. The people that would have purchased Gospel Music are going less and less to Church and if I was in the Gospel business, I would be very concerned about the future, as very soon there probably won't be anyone around to buy those cds which ultimately will result in more hate and disobedience as these Gospel individuals and labels fight for scarce resources and get desperat for mere survival.
Solution: Love and lose the doctrine of hate. Love each other, Love kids and Love the community and express that Love. Hate and excuses and self-pity will only lead to further demise and that's the truth.

This is a good topic!
I'ma say sumthin that I said awhile back...
Oops...let me turn into "The HHH Bishop" for a sec...
Think about it this way. How are movies made? Investors. How are TV shows made? Investors. How are major record companies funded? Investors. Investors put money into companies expecting a return on their investments. That's why you have advertisements in movies. The most effective kind are the suttle ones. One movie I like because of the plot is 'The Italian Job." If any of Y'all has seen this movie then flashback to the part where the bombs go off under the truck after "Wrench" counts down to zero. You see people running scared everyone including one guy dressed up in a "Spider-Man" costume. That was a subliminal message! Also, in movies, you'll see a can of "Coke". All of this deals with investing and marketing.
Stay with now...I am going somewhere with this....
What drives radio stations to play the same garbage over and over again? What drives certain movie companies to make garbage movies? What drive TV stations to put on garbage day after day, bombard us with "reality TV" (I ain't gonna front. I miss the days when the networks used to have the good ol fashioned "Sunday Movie"!) and put on shows that detract from actual reality and truth? Sex.
What's poppin in the mainstream as a whole right now? Songs about "hittin it" and how many ways it can be done. Not to mention how easy it seems. Advertisers and investors (Bishop's Note: I mean this in the general sense. It doesn't apply to everyone.) know that the way to make more money back on their investments is to go with what's poppin. "Give the people what they want."
Now let's get deep for a minute...
What would people want to see or hear about sex? Why do people get drunk and high?
Answer: To escape from reality. Stay with me...it's about to come together...
What is a fan? Someone who loves an star's music or just loves them. Sometimes both. That's why they have the posters on their walls amongst other things...
What does this all equate to? Fantasy!!! Fantasy is the escape from reality! Fantasy sells records, brings in box office revenue and pays investors and advertisers handsomely!!!
Now you're feelin me...
What aren't HHH gettin signed to major record labels or going platinum? Because we represent the TRUTH!!! WE REPRESENT CHRIST!! The truth is less marketable than fantasy. That's why big name companies don't want to invest in us because they feel that they won't make a big return on their investment. It's business...and the first goal of any business is profit. How do you make a profit? Come up with something that the people want and need!
Why aren't we gettin major play on radio? Cause it takes money to do so. It used to be on an artist merit....now it's about what you can give them. Y'all see how Sony just got in trouble for payola!! Also, certain record companies pay radio stations NOT to play certain artists so that their artists can get more rotation and spins. That's what happened to The Wu-Tang Clan.
Also...they know that we as Christains have a "money" issue. (Again...that general sense...) We'll say, "I won't charge to perform. I'm in it for the ministry." Well...I'ma charge and do a contract. Period. Now there are exceptions of course like The HHH Awards and whatever I chose to make that exception. Aside from that, I'm charging! Churches love to have people perform but don't wanna pay them yet if a Pastor comes to their church to speak...he gets paid in most cases! If I do a 30 minute show, a contract or agreement will be drawn and I will be paid half up front and the rest once my performance is over. That's how the majors do it!!! Yes God will provide...yes, it's about ministry...but it's also business. Money supports and builds a ministry. Without it, your ministry can only be underground and local at best. Let Motown come up to me and say, "We want to distribute and market your album." I'ma thank God, call up my lawyer, and get some contracts done for a distribution deal. The more people that hear the message...the better!
But...Y'all know what's really sad?
Our country is mostly Christian yet we as a country (Again the general sense) still keep a demand for that same fantasy of sex, drugs, and in some cases violence! We'll bump 50 Cent's "Candy Shop" and know full well what he's talking about and yet we "Christians" will bump it because it's what's poppin! Matter of fact (Now I'm really get real and again I mean this in the general sense) we men will follow what the women listen to because if the women like it, we like it! Why do men go to a club? It ain't to enjoy each other's company cause we can do that by just playing some bones or basketball! No, we go to see the women, dance with them, and hopefully take one home! What's playing in the club? The same fantasy I just mentioned!
But...
I also know that a change or shall we say a shift of the wind is getting ready to occur. Hip-Hop is getting ready to go back to it's roots. It can only have so many "one night stands" before judgement happens. Start getting ready for the time when positivity in music will be a selling point. Get ready for the time when we can capitalize off of that to spread God's Word! There's going to come a time when major labels will properly support AND market us. I also know that with this, you will have labels that will jump on the bandwagon just because HHH is selling big! However, we can't let a bad apple stop the rest of us from bringin the heat for Christ!
Just my Gold Boullin up in dis peesh...forget the two cents!
Shalom
