Gospel music is a very small market with an even smaller base of consumers. Most people (saved or not) use music as a method of enjoying themselves/relaxing etc. With that said, most choirs and such wouldnt really lend itself to meeting that desired 'need'/want.
I agree whole heartedly. If you are going to compare Gospel/Christian music to the world you have to consider the fan base. (Most Christians are buying up as much non-gospel as they are gospel music) You don't see non-christians buying up Fred's CD's (for the most part). CD BURNING - Nuf' Said. The music business is just that. Business. The majority of Christian artists don't have the vision or the $$$ to do what it takes to be HUGE in the industry. They don't, won't or can't do the constant concerts from city to city, the travel, the sacrifice of friends and family. The quality of production comes to question. I personally look at it as a blessing. In light of the relatively small fan base compared to the world. There is enough variety that we listen to many artists. AND because we are Christians we (most often) don't trip over any one particular artist and make them into an idol. (I remember my Michael Jackson and then Prince craze. BC I would listen to them over and over again in the car with the tape deck on auto repeat (where it would get to the end of the song then rewind to the space before the song...) I'm sure that if we weren't Christ centered and idolized some of these artists more that more of them would go platinum. But is that what it's all about?
